چکیده

This paper presents an experimentally validated electromechanical model of cylindrical actuators made of dielectric elastomers with compliant electrodes. Modelling was based on independent electrical and mechanical analyses of the specific configuration of the device. The expressions of the electrostatic pressures exerted by the electrodes in response to an applied voltage were formulated and inserted into the expressions of the actuator mechanical deformations, obtained by assuming linearly elastic stress–strain constitutive equations of the material for small strains. Values of axial strains expected from the model well fit those recorded from a realised actuator, electrically stimulated by step-wise high voltages. This actuator has carbon grease electrodes smeared on a cylinder-shaped silicone elastomer, showing a roomtemperature-relative dielectric constant of 3 within a wide frequency range (10–10 Hz). An axial strain of 4.5% due to a voltage per unit wall thickness of 100 V/Am was measured at a 5% axial prestrain, around which the material held a Young’s modulus of 5 MPa. D 2004 Elsevier B.V. Electromechanical characterisation of dielectric elastomer planar actuators: comparative evaluation of different electrode materials and different counterloads

This work intends to extend the electromechanical characterisation of dielectric elastomer actuators. Planar actuators were realised with a 50 m-thick film of an acrylic elastomer coated with compliant electrodes. The isotonic transverse strain, the isometric transverse stress and the driving current, due to a 2 s high voltage impulse, were measured for four electrode materials (thickened elect...

A method to analyze electromechanical stability of dielectric elastomer actuators

This letter describes a method to analyze electromechanical stability of dielectric elastomer actuators. We write the free energy of an actuator using stretches and nominal electric displacement as generalized coordinates, and pre-stresses and voltage as control parameters. When the Hessian of the free-energy function ceases to be positive-definite, the actuator thins down drastically, often re...

On designing dielectric elastomer actuators

Subject to a voltage, a dielectric elastomer can deform substantially, making it a desirable material for actuators. Designing such an actuator, however, has been challenging due to nonlinear equations of state, as well as multiple modes of failure, parameters of design, and measures of performance. This paper explores these issues, using a spring-roll actuator as an example. We formulate the e...

High-performance electromechanical transduction using laterally-constrained dielectric elastomers part I: Actuation processes

A dielectric elastomer transducer is a deformable capacitor, and is under development as a sensor, actuator, or generator. Among various geometric configurations, laterallyconstrained transducer, also known as pure-shear transducer, is easy to implement and effective to couple mechanical force and electrical voltage. This analytical study reveals that lateral pre-stretch enhances actuation, far...

Helical dielectric elastomer actuators

This paper presents a new type of contractile polymer-based electromechanical linear actuator. The device belongs to the class of dielectric elastomer actuators, which are typically capable of undergoing large deformations induced by an applied electric field. It is based on a novel helical configuration, suitable for the generation of electrically driven axial contractions and radial expansion...
